When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in the summer of 2022, I felt helpless and dismayed. While working on another art project, I found myself pasting together small bits of paper off to one side. Without thinking, I picked up a scrap that said CHOICE, and that gave me an idea. Over the next week, I made nine small collages — each just 2.5″ square — on card stock with text snippets underneath. (Most were definitions of “choice” clipped from old dictionaries; the images below show only the collages.) When I told family, friends, and Instagram followers that I was offering these collages in exchange for donations to the National Network of Abortion Funds, people stepped up. This spontaneous project kept me grounded during a volatile time and raised more than $800 to support safe, compassionate access to abortion.
