The bird blocks began when my friend Rachel handed me a box of beautiful wood samples, each one unique. We don’t know where the samples originated; they belonged to another artist before Rachel got them. They seemed destined to pass from hand to hand until someone felt inspired to do something special with them.
I decided to try them as foundations for collage and image transfers of post-it pigeon drawings. The first one was so satisfying that I kept going. The blocks range from from 3.5″ to 4″ square; each one is 2″ deep. Some smell like cedar, others like pine. Some have knots, holes, or other perfectly imperfect parts. They feel so good in the hand.
The video below gives a 360-degree view of several blocks. Most have a few small bits of collage or text on the sides. Under the video, you’ll find a photo of the top of each block. If there’s “secret” text on the underside of the block, that’s in the caption, in parentheses.
Each block is $65, including U.S. shipping. I donate 25% of the proceeds to pigeon rescue organizations, including Palomacy Pigeon & Dove Rescue & Moose’s Flock.
“I came home the other night, the whole house was dark. A small light was on in my bedroom. The dim light was hitting the bird block and my heart fluttered when I saw it. It’s so beautiful. I love it and look at it all the time.” ~ Pam G.
